Bio: Alice Wu is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, and arts worker in Oakland, CA. Her practice draws from a former career in fashion to explore themes of performance in everyday life, self-presentation, and reinvention after loss.
Statement: My recent work includes sculptures made from combinations of wood, wire, and textile remnants collected from my fashion design practice. Each piece incorporates multiple techniques: stitching, stuffing, cutting, weaving. Sometimes the pieces are slathered with paint. The abstract results can be touched, held, worn, rearranged. I grew up in the U.S. and Taiwan. Both and neither are home, so I’m always observing local visual language signifying identity and belonging. How do I want to fit in, how do I want to stand out? I’m curious about the performance of everyday life. What does self-presentation look while navigating different social roles and community relationships?
